I’m Yutaka Tokushima, CEO of Instalimb.
I started the artificial limb business in 2014 when I was a Japanese overseas corporation volunteer. The main motivation for starting this business came when I met a diabetic patient suffering from gangrene due to his condition.
He was living in a poor rule area on Bohol Island. He said that he has had diabetes for about two years and his toe was already sore and a bit of bone was showing so badly that I couldn't see it straight ahead. He told me that he had two children and he worked hard for his children. Now that his child is working on his behalf. I explained that gangrene poison is dangerous when it hits the body again and again. I asked him if he could exercise by wearing artificial limbs to recover from diabetes and work again. The man didn’t say anything.Later I learned that there was no artificial limb factory in the area and it was almost impossible to buy artificial limbs. When I visited the clinic again a few weeks later I learned that he had died. Although I asked what was going on with his family, no one could give me any answers.
I thought this was not just a problem in the Philippines but a global problem. In order to solve this problem, we started to develop the product related to this project which makes it possible to provide artificial limb manufacturing at low cost, which is the background motivation that led to the development in the first place.
After returning to Japan as a researcher at Keio University as an entrepreneur and with a lot of cooperation from various fields. I have completed the development of solutions for ultra-low-cost prosthetic consisting of a 3D printer and 3D CAD for prosthetic. I am now confident that the solution can be a way to solve this desperate situation of artificial limbs in developing countries.
Would you like to work with us to change the world and improve the QOL of artificial limb users and prosthetics and orthotics users around the world?
